CliniComp Intl. selected to provide clinical information systems at U.S. military hospitals; Phase One includes an I & I Lab and initial installations at naval hospital, Camp Pendleton, Calif., and USAF Medical Center, Wright-Patterson, Dayton, Ohio.

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 20, 1995--CliniComp Intl., a leader in the development of clinical computer systems for the healthcare industry, has been selected to provide its clinical information system (CIS Cis (sĭs), same as Kish (1.)

The initial contract includes an I & I (Integration and Interoperability) Lab and hospital-wide installation of the system at two initial sites: the 198-bed USAF Medical Center at Wright- Patterson in Dayton, and the 209-bed naval hospital at Camp Pendleton in Southern California. The CliniComp CIS will be installed at Wright-Patterson and Camp Pendleton in the first quarter of calendar year 1996 with 127 and 192 display stations, respectively.

Upon successful installation and acceptance of the system at these sites, it is expected that CliniComp's CIS will be deployed, via a different contract vehicle, at 35 additional military hospital sites worldwide. Installations will start at the 135-bed Martin Army Community Hospital at Ft. Benning, Georgia, and the National Capital region hospitals: the 698-bed Walter Reed Army Medical Center Walter Reed Army Medical Center, major hospital complex in Washington, D. C., and Forest Glen, Md.; est. 1923 and named for U.S. army surgeon Walter Reed. It is composed of seven units including a general hospital and a research institute. Wilson Chao, the Northrop Grumman program manager, said that the contract from Northrop Grumman will be signed by the end of the month.

"The signing of the contract represents the culmination of a complex evaluation process, which was surprisingly clear-cut. CliniComp Intl. has an effective CIS, which scored highest technically and was lowest in cost," said Chao.

The CliniComp Clinical Information System automates the process of clinical charting and eliminates manual charting. The CIS collects and synthesizes data from the clinical staff, bedside instrumentation and other computer systems and makes it easily accessible from display stations at point of care or at remote locations, such as physician's offices. The result is the foundation for the in-patient portion of the computerized patient record that has higher quality information, collected in a far more efficient manner than current processes.

The CliniComp CIS operates in clinical areas of the hospital, including intensive care units, emergency departments, labor and delivery, medical-surgical, pediatrics, operating rooms and out- patient procedural areas.

CliniComp's CIS is currently operating at medical institutions in the U.S. and Europe, including two U.S. military medical centers: Madigan Army Medical Center Madigan Army Medical Center located in Fort Lewis, Washington, is one of the largest military hospitals on the West Coast of the USA.

The hospital was named in honor of Colonel Patrick S. Madigan, an assistant to the U.S.

MAMC, which is the site of one of the largest CIS installations in the world, was honored as one of "America's 10 Most Computer Advanced Healthcare Institutions" in 1994 by Healthcare Informatics Magazine.

Chris Haudenschild, president and founder of CliniComp Intl. said, "The Department of Defense has taken a definite leadership role in the effort to automate clinical record keeping in healthcare environments. This project has the potential to create a DOD-wide database that can track large numbers of patients throughout the continuum of care.

"This is an exciting situation," Haudenschild continued, "the medical information superhighway people have dreamed about is within our short-term reach."
