Client/Server technology gaining momentum with banks; With 11 banks live on its true client/server pulse system, EastPoint Technology sees the next generation of banking systems emerge.

prospects about its full service banking software, there were always two questions that had to be addressed. The first concerned what client/server An architecture in which the user's PC (the client) is the requesting machine and the server is the supplying machine, both of which are connected via a local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN).  was, and only then, why EastPoint Technology. Many times the conversation never overcame the education curve needed to understand and appreciate what the combination of open-systems host computers and PC workstations is capable of delivering.

Today EastPoint has 40 full-time employees and 11 banks running its Pulse 6.0 software. With another three financial service organizations signed and scheduled to be converted the end of first quarter 1996, EastPoint's $9 million investment in client/server technology is translating into rapid growth. EastPoint's director of marketing, Dean Nicholaides, commented, "The biggest difference is we are getting calls from banks that have already decided they need client/server technology, and they are actively looking for Looking for

companies that can fill that need."

This change is the result of a number of factors. Conferences like Microbanker and FutureBank have been focusing on client/server as an emerging information systems strategy since 1989. Many leading banking technology consultants have carefully watched the client/server companies evolve. They advised interested clients to wait until this move away from mainframe systems matured. This holding pattern is breaking up with what one consultant calls "well-defined" moves by companies like EastPoint into the banking market. Finally, the amount of published information about client/servers has increased dramatically. This includes coverage in trade articles, newsletters, and books like Client Server Strategies by David Vaskevitch.

Unlike other banking technologies that generally find a particular niche within the broad range of financial service organization types and sizes, client/server appeal is less restricted to type.
