Client/Server Labs Develops Intranet Benchmark.ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- May 20, 1996 -- Client/Server Labs, the owner and manager of RPMark95 and RPM/dbs, announces the upcoming release of its new intranet benchmark. This new benchmark is being designed to provide end-users with the knowledge of how a web server configuration of hardware and software (setup strictly for intranet usage) will perform in an otherwise stable environment Intranet usage for this benchmark is defined as a closed (to the internet) network that utilizes common internet tools and functionality, ie: web server, browser, and RDBMS (Relational DataBase Management System) See relational database and DBMS. RDBMS - relational database . The new intranet benchmark, due out in July, is being designed to test intranet throughput using a browser/web server configuration. It will also incorporate "real world" based transactions, spanning the most common end-user tasks currently found in intranet/internet usage. Due to the rapidly evolving business usage of the internet and its constantly changing standards, security issues, and end-user requirements, Client/Server Labs has adopted a phased approach to the development of its intranet benchmark. This approach will help eliminate the risk associated with the constantly changing internet-based technology. Phase One of Client/Server Labs' intranet benchmark will be based on current, standard, and commonly used internet/intranet functionality. Forthcoming phases, additions, and modifications of the intranet benchmark suite of tests will reflect future intranet technology and its common usage. "The need for an evaluation service among those making purchase and implementation decisions for intranets is obvious, and we feel that Client/Server Labs is the logical choice to bring this service to the market," said Curtis F. Franklin, director of Client/Server Labs. The Client/Server Labs' intranet benchmark will test any intranet server combination consisting of a: server, operating system, protocol stack, security system, web server software, RDBMS connection and RDBMS. Client/Server Labs will exercise test systems under heavy user loads by using Mercury Interactive's WebTest automated testing software. Some of the benchmark's test client functions include: --Decision Support (DSS (1) (Digital Signature Standard) A National Security Administration standard for authenticating an electronic message. See RSA and digital signature. (2) (Digital Satellite S ) transactions. --On-Line Transaction Processing (OLTP (OnLine Transaction Processing) See transaction processing and OLCP. OLTP - On-Line Transaction Processing ) transactions --URL Connectivity - clients will perform an iterative, looping, URL URL in full Uniform Resource Locator Address of a resource on the Internet. The resource can be any type of file stored on a server, such as a Web page, a text file, a graphics file, or an application program. (uniform resource locator See URL. (World-Wide Web) Uniform Resource Locator - (URL, previously "Universal") A standard way of specifying the location of an object, typically a web page, on the Internet. Other types of object are described below. ) lookup function. --HTML Graphics - clients will perform document level graphics (embedded MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs). , MJPEG MJPEG Motion Joint Photographic Experts Group , GIF GIF in full Graphics Interchange Format Standard computer file format for graphic images. GIF files use data compression to reduce the file size. The original version of the format was developed by CompuServe in 1987. , JPG See JPEG. jpg - JPEG ). --BLOB (binary large object (database) binary large object - (BLOB) A large block of data stored in a database, such as an image or sound file. A BLOB has no structure which can be interpreted by the database management system but is known only by its size and location. ) retrieval and graphics - clients will perform a database retrieval and display of images (MPEG, MJPEG, GIF, JPG). About Client/Server Labs Client/Server Labs provides an independent source for unbiased, non-vendor-managed performance testing for all components in a client/server environment. Variables that can be tested include but are not limited to servers, databases, clients and network operating systems. RPMark 95 RPMark95 measures the overall performance of the client/server systems most often used in small or medium-sized organizations. It is based on three concurrent workloads, including OLTP (on-line transaction processing (database) On-Line Transaction Processing - (OLTP) The processing of transactions by computers in real time. ), DSS (decision support) and file serving/office automation. RPM/dbs RPM/dbs, is a client/server benchmark that measures the balanced system performance of mid-size to enterprise class servers. It is based on two concurrent workloads: OLTP and DSS running simultaneously. Custom Testing Custom tests conducted by Client/Server Labs include: software and hardware compatibility; capacity/load performance measurement; custom software evaluations; reliability testing; competitive evaluations; database performance measurement; application benchmarking; hardware architecture performance comparisons; stress testing and specification compliance testing. Client/Server Labs is located at 8601 Dunwoody Place, Suite 332, Atlanta, GA 30350-2509.
