ClickArray Networks, the developer of the industry's first truly integrated Web traffic management appliance, today announced that the company's Array 1000 Web traffic management system significantly outperforms Cisco Systems' CSS 11800 content services switch and Nortel Networks (Nortel Networks Limited, Brampton, Ontario, www.nortelnetworks.com) A world leader in telecommunications products, which includes switching, wireless and broadband systems for service providers and carriers, telephones and systems for residential and business users, computer telephony  Alteon 180e Web switch.  benchmark tests performed by eTesting Labs, the Array 1000's combination of Layer 4-7 load balancing The fine tuning of a computer system, network or disk subsystem in order to more evenly distribute the data and/or processing across available resources. For example, in clustering, load balancing might distribute the incoming transactions evenly to all servers, or it might redirect them  and on-board caching fueled its dramatic performance superiority over the other devices.

"Service providers and enterprise data center architects are considering multifunction units to increase performance while controlling costs," said Michael Hoch, Senior Analyst at Aberdeen Group. "Tests like these show that products like those from ClickArray can simplify infrastructure architecture and deployment, as well as on-going operations and management, without sacrificing features and functions."

The Array 1000 performed 4,312 HTTP requests per second using a pool of nine Web servers. In the same configuration, the Cisco and Alteon switches maxed out at 1,864 and 1,515 requests per second, respectively. Even when 11 servers were added to the Cisco and Alteon test configurations for a total of 20, these devices generated only about 2,700 requests per second.

"The tests clearly demonstrate the Array 1000's superiority over more expensive Web switches from Cisco Systems and Nortel Networks," said Lawrence Lu, founder and Chief Executive Officer of ClickArray Networks. "In addition to improved Web site performance, the all-in-one Array 1000 requires far less capital outlay capital outlay

The list prices of the tested systems are $40,995 for the Cisco CSS 11800 and $26,195 for the Alteon 180e. ClickArray's all-in-one Array 1000 Web traffic management system is available for less than $25,000 and combines advanced Layer 4-7 load balancing for up to 1,000 servers and 1,000,000 concurrent connections with high-performance server caching, and other essential networking functions.

About eTesting Labs' Layer 4-7 Performance Comparison

All the products tested perform Layer 4-7 load balancing to improve overall Web serving performance. All benchmarking was done using the WebBench 4.01 Web server performance benchmark software. WebBench 4.01 measures Web server performance by using multiple network-based PC clients to make HTTP 1.0 requests of a Web server. The tests enabled the Array 1000's on-board reverse proxy caching, a performance-enhancing feature that is not available on either the Cisco 11800 or Alteon 180e.
