Cleveland-Cliffs Announces Management Changes in Its Ferrous Metallics Business Segment.

:CLF) today announced two changes in the management of the Company's wholly owned subsidiary Wholly Owned Subsidiary

A subsidiary whose parent company owns 100% of its common stock.

, Cliffs Reduced Iron Corporation (CRIC), effective May 1, 2000:

-- Steven A. Elmquist has been appointed Vice President and

General Manager of CRIC with responsibility for the Cliffs

and Associates Limited (CAL) hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant

in Trinidad and Tobago Trinidad and Tobago (trĭn`ĭdăd, təbā`gō), officially Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, republic (2005 est. pop. 1,088,000), 1,980 sq mi (5,129 sq km), West Indies. The capital is Port of Spain. . Elmquist will report to Edward C.

Dowling, Cliffs' Senior Vice President-Operations.

-- Rainald W. von Bitter, who is currently responsible for the

CAL plant in Trinidad, will become Vice President and

General Manager-Reduced Iron Project Support of CRIC. In his

new position, Ray will continue to provide liaison and

support to CAL, as well as assisting in the continuing

development of Cliffs' ferrous metallics business. von

Bitter will report to William R. Calfee, Cliffs' Executive

Vice President-Commercial, and President of CRIC.

Mr. Elmquist is currently Assistant General Manager of the Cliffs-managed Hibbing Taconite Mine in Minnesota and prior to that was Manager of the Silver Bay operations of Cliffs' wholly-owned Northshore Mining Company, also in Minnesota. Before joining Cliffs in 1990, he held management positions with several metallics companies prototyping direct reduced iron Direct reduced iron is produced from iron ore powder through heating and chemical reduction by natural gas.

While this is in general a more expensive process than reducing the ore in a blast furnace, there are several factors which can make it economical:

Cleveland-Cliffs is the largest supplier of iron ore products to the North American steel industry and is developing a significant ferrous metallics business. Subsidiaries of the Company manage six iron ore mines in North America and hold equity interests in five of the mines. Cliffs has a major iron ore reserve position in the United States, is a substantial iron ore merchant, and is beginning production of hot briquetted iron at a joint venture plant in Trinidad and Tobago.
