Cleophus Thomas, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of A.G. Gaston Corp., the holding company for Booker T. Washington Insurance Co., has been elected to the board of directors of AmSouth Bancorporation (NYSE NYSE

In making today's announcement, C. Dowd Ritter, AmSouth's chairman, president and chief executive officer, said, "Cleo Thomas is a distinguished and thoughtful leader and we are proud to add him to our board. Thomas, 46, joined Gaston Corp. in 1992 as general counsel. He is also of counsel to the law firm Lange, Simpson, Robinson & Somerville LLP.

Active in numerous civic, cultural, charitable and professional organizations, Thomas is currently a member of the board of directors of The Donoho School, the Alabama Children's Hospital, the Wallace Foundation and the West Anniston Community Foundation. Thomas is married to the former Carla Ann Newbern and they have three children.
