Clearing up graph equation error in january issue.

It has come to our attention. that there is an error in the article, "How Do Manganese manganese (măng`gənēs, măn`–) [Lat.,=magnet], metallic chemical element; symbol Mn; at. no. 25; at. wt. 54.938; m.p. about 1,244°C;; b.p. about 1,962°C;; sp. gr. 7.2 to 7. , Sulfur Levels Affect Gray Iron Properties," which was published in the January issue of MODERN CASTING. On page 43, Fig. 2 shows a graph of liquidus temperature The Liquidus Temperature, TL or Tliq, is mostly used for glasses and alloys. It specifies the maximum temperature at which crystals can co-exist with the melt in thermodynamic equilibrium. Above the Liquidus Temperature the material is homogeneous.  vs. carbon equivalent. Associated with the graph is the following equation: y= -92.593[x.sup.2] + 573.15x + 380.24

Fig. 2 shows the temperature axis in degrees Fahrenheit. However, the equation, which was taken from an original AFS A distributed file system for large, widely dispersed Unix and Windows networks from Transarc Corporation, now part of IBM. It is noted for its ease of administration and expandability and stems from Carnegie-Mellon's Andrew File System.

AFS - Andrew File System
Transactions paper (03-072), gives the value of temperature (y) in degrees Celsius. Thus readers should be aware that using the equation to calculate a liquidus temperature (y) for a given carbon equivalent (x) will result in a temperature in degrees Celsius. The temperature must be converted to degrees Fahrenheit to be in agreement with Fig. 2.
