It's understandable that this can be a stressful time, and disappointment is certainly possible, but the thing to remember is not to panic if you don't get the results you wanted. Firstly, it's well worth calling your institution of choice anyway and seeing if they are willing to still offer you a place, particularly if you narrowly missed the required grades. On the UCAS website, there is a useful track service which you can use to see if your place at an institution has been confirmed. To access the system, log in at www. ucas.com/students/track/with your UCAS application number and the username The name you use to identify yourself when logging into a computer system or online service. If you are unsuccessful with your first choice of institution, but have met the conditions required for your second choice, you will be accepted there. However, if you actually do much better than you expected and your grades exceed those required for the course you applied for, you can take advantage of UCAS's new adjustment service. This is a great service which gives you a short time to search for other courses which may suit your higher grades, while holding onto your original confirmed place. You can register to use the adjustment service through the track system. Many students receiving their A-Level results this week will find themselves going through Clearing, either because they haven't applied to go to university yet or they have done better or worse than expected. Either way, it's always best to have a Plan B in mind. The UCAS website is packed with information about the Clearing process and it's the first port of call for students on results day. If you have not yet applied to go to university, you can contact your chosen institution directly. If you have already applied to go to University, but are not holding a place, you will be in Clearing and your Clearing number will be displayed on UCAS's track system, so you can quote this when you contact other universities. When you contact a university, there will be people available to offer advice and support on the best option for you. Be ready to talk about yourself and your results -the people you speak to will need as much information as possible in order to make their decision. Most universities will offer guided campus tours and staff will be able to answer questions in person. * LIVERPOOL Liverpool, city (1991 pop. 448,300), NW England, on the Mersey River near its mouth.
