Channel's New Delta V Service - Offering Internet

Accelerator Service to Regions Without Broadband Access 

SkyStream Networks, a leading provider of networking solutions for broadband media delivery, announced today that Clear Channel Wireless, a division of radio and television pioneer, Clear Channel Communications, Inc. (NYSE:CCU) has selected SkyStream's award-winning Source Media (TM) router (SMR) platform to deliver broadband Internet content via digital television airwaves to home users. Clear Channel Wireless' new nationwide Delta V service leverages digital spectrum from participating local television stations to accelerate the dial-up Internet access for consumers in areas where broadband connections have been previously unavailable. Using SkyStream's SMR platform as an integral part of its system, Clear Channel has successfully conducted a trial of the first-of-its-kind service with approximately 100 consumers using a small portion of the digital spectrum from WKRC (a Clear Channel-owned station) in Cincinnati, Ohio. Clear Channel Wireless anticipates that television stations will begin to roll out the new high-speed Internet accelerator service by end of summer, 2001.

The Clear Channel Wireless system, known as DELTA V (Delta for "change" and V for Velocity), is designed to allow TV stations which are committed to providing free, over the air High Definition signals to their markets an opportunity to pay some of the costs of making the transition to HDTV. "This system begins to bridge the digital divide, allowing unserved consumers access to high speed Internet, and helps the committed broadcaster find a way to help pay for the high cost of conversion. SkyStream's Source Media(TM) router (SMR) enables television broadcasters and other service providers to deliver packaged broadband media portals and streaming media content using their television infrastructures. With SkyStream's SMR, stations can deliver entire digital content packages to customers by transmitting them over their digital terrestrial television spectrum. In addition to the SMR, SkyStream also provides an edge-receiving device - the Edge Media (TM) router (EMR-5000) and zBand Advanced Content Distribution software. Both work in conjunction with the SMR to make up an overlay broadcast infrastructure for the multicast delivery of rich, broadband content to TV set-tops or PCs.
