It intends to sell the site - a relic of the Cold War which is contaminated with depleted uranium and arsenic - to property giant Capital & Regional which is planning to build a retail park, new homes and offices. On Tuesday, councillors approved plans for an operation to clear the site which will involve the movement of around 1,500 20-tonne lorries. The plan to clear the land has been welcomed by most people - including Friends of the Earth-- but some residents of Rhiwbina and Llanishen are concerned about the amount of traffic. In a briefing to councillors, an agent for Defence Estates said a contractor could be appointed ``early next week''. The briefing from environmental consultants Enviros added: ``The appointed contractor would be given a two-week mobilisation period so it is likely that the works could start by the end of the week commencing August 12. ``There is a 20-week contract period, so the works could be complete before Christmas.'' Disposal wagons will leave and enter the Caerphilly Road access to the site between 9.30am and 3.30pm. There will be no work on Sundays, Bank Holidays or at night. Between 30 and 70 journeys are expected a day via a route through Rhiwbina to the A470 and another via Eastern Avenue to the motorway. |
