The pipeline was used for authorised discharge of radioactive liquid from Sellafield. The recovery team made more than 2,500 dives, made 700 undersea cuts and filled 55 freight containers to recover 3,308 metres of redundant pipe. The final sections have now been lifted from the sea bed and will be transported to the Low Level Waste Repository at nearby Drigg. Ken Riddell, project manager, said: "The completion of this work is a significant decommissioning milestone and demonstrates British Nuclear Group's commitment and ability to safely clean up ageing infrastructure." The project started in August 2003 and involved cutting sections of pipeline underwater Underwater 1. The container was then lifted out of the water and placed in a licensed transport container on board a barge barge, large boat, generally flat-bottomed, used for transporting goods. When full, the container was taken to Workington Docks for rail transport to the Low Level Waste Repository for final disposal. |
