Clay Moore: Meeting Standards (Viewpoint Records VP0001).

Clay Moore: Meeting Standards (Viewpoint Records VP0001)

This CD is a double debut: the first release for Viewpoint Records and for guitarist Clay Moore. Both debuts are successful, with Viewpoint capturing the sound with clarity and punch, and Moore providing a program of musical substance, covering eight standards (if you can count the theme from "Rocky and Bullwinkle" as a standard, that is) and one original composition with energy and taste. Six of the cuts feature a trio, while three of the cuts add a tenor sax to the mix. Moore and his compadres are able to take a standard you have heard many times, such as "The Shadow of Your Smile," and make it sound new again. Especially enjoyable is Moore's arrangement of Horace Silver's "Song for My Father," and Charlie Parker Noun 1.
