On May 4, 1891, an exhibition of recent works by Claude Monet opened at the Durand-Ruel Gallery in Paris, including a series of 15 paintings intended to be seen together, each depicting landscapes with stacks of wheat. The subject of the wheat-stack brings to mind peoples' ability to sustain themselves and their animals on the richness of the harvest. Monet, who lived for many years in rural settings, knew the importance of stacks of wheat to agriculture. However, the subject of the paintings was essentially ignored by Monet's contemporaries. Critics and artists focused instead on the effect of time and season on the outdoor scene, and the uses of light, color, and brushstroke to paint a fleeting moment.
