Byline: by Will Hayler

BATTLE PAINT proved the class act of the day as he returned from the wilderness to register a first victory for nearly two years in the 6f Unison Conditions Stakes.

"He has been with John since the start of the year, but we have just been taking our time with him," said Matthew Sigsworth, representative of Cheveley Park Stud, who bought into the colt before the start of his three-year-old career.

"He's got one or two fancy entries, but we'll see what John and Chris Richardson Christopher Michael Richardson (born February 19, 1984) is an American singer who finished in the top six on the sixth season of American Idol. He was eliminated on May 2, 2007.  decide to do."

Fortune understandably felt that Battle Paint, making his first start for 419 days, would improve for the run.

"He was favourite for the French Guineas French Guinea: see Guinea, republic, Africa. , so you would have been upset if he hadn't run well, but he did it well and there's a bit of improvement to come from him."

Ahern was odds-on to make it three for the day when Checklow took to the track in the 1m2 1/2 f handicap. The Ladbrokes St Leger entry was reckoned to be well in for his handicap debut and was sent off at 4-7 to beat an experienced field, but he never looked happy and could only plug on at the one pace to finish fourth.

It was 4-1 second-favourite Nanton, trained by Jim Goldie, who took the spoils coming from well off the pace to win going away under Danny Tudhope.

"I felt that we got there too early last time, so we decided to drop him in today and track the favourite," said Goldie.

"We might look at the Shergar Cup next weekend for him or there is a race at Haydock to consider."
