Classrooms Invited to Participate in "America Dreams," National On-line Learning Event.

BERKELEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 17, 1998--America Dreams, a classroom internet project, is recruiting classes now for a national, six-week program, beginning October 13.

America Dreams was developed by Fellows of the American Memory Program, Library of Congress. It helps students learn to use the internet to become effective researchers using the National Digital Library and other on-line resources. Students will share what they've learned with other classes -- and the world -- on the internet.

Each class will analyze the historic dreams of Americans, create a contemporary portrait of the dreams of their own communities, and consider their personal role in creating the individual and collective dreams that will shape America's future.

The resulting Portrait of America on the eve of the new millennium strives to present a unique and diverse students'-eye-view of America from the perspectives of rural and urban classrooms, inner city and suburban schools, ethnic neighborhood schools, parochial schools and home school classes throughout the United States.

In addition to the Portrait of America, students, teachers, and members of their local communities will share their personal dreams for the future on a digital "Wall of Dreams." Meeting in on-line chats and video conferences, this community of "American Dreamers" will share their work with elected officials nationally, and with the Library of Congress.

America Dreams begins Tuesday, October 13 and continues through November 24. Registrations are being accepted at the project website, http://www.internet-catalyst.org/projects/amproject/splash.html.
