Classical pays off for KKGO-FM KKGO-FM is a commercial radio station located in Los Angeles, California, broadcasting on 105.1 FM. KKGO airs a country music format, branded as "Go Country 105". History
KKGO-FM signed on in February of 1959, airing a traditional jazz music format until 1989.

Six months after Saul Levine changed the format of KKGO-FM (105.1) from jazz to classical, he can sit back and gloat. His audience has grown from 300,000 people a week to 450,000.

Levine, of course, was given an assist by the departure of KFAC from the classical scene. He decided to change formats to fill a void left by KFAC.

Levine said he is not about to lose sleep over this, noting that he never once received a thank you from a jazz listener.

Moreover, the change in format has lined Levine's pocket. Along with the growth of its audience, KKGO's revenues have climbed 50 percent, he said.

KKGO is not Levine's first venture in classical music. The station, founded in 1959, had a classical format during its first year of operation.

Levine, a pioneer in FM broadcasting FM broadcasting is a broadcast technology invented by Edwin Howard Armstrong that uses frequency modulation (FM) to provide high-fidelity sound over broadcast radio.

Since starting KKGO, Levine has picked up FM stations in Monterey and Honolulu. The Monterey station also has a classical format.
