Considerable effort went into Copland; however, things changed after Apple purchased NeXT Computer. See Rhapsody. and His World * (Bard College Bard College, at Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.; founded 1860 as St. Stephen's College for men; rechartered 1935 as Bard College; became coeducational in 1944; affiliated with Columbia Univ. 1928–44. A small, progressive college, Bard stresses independent study. It offers graduate degrees in cooperation with Columbia (engineering), the Univ. of Rochester (business), Syracuse (public administration), Hunter College and the Univ.. Annandaleon-Hudson, N.Y.): The music and life of America's great gay composer are celebrated at the Bard Music Festival, including performances by the American Symphony Orchestra. (Oct. 21-23) The Mines of Sulfur * (Lincoln Center, New York): The New York City Opera performs out composer Richard Rodney Bennett's masterful opera combining a sexy ghost story and a frightening drag show. This haunting work was also just released on Chandos. (Oct. 23-Nov. 5) November Percussion Concerto * (Kimmel Center, Philadelphia): Top American composer and out lesbian Jennifer Higdon delivers her latest creation, performed by soloist Colin Currie and the Philadelphia Orchestra Philadelphia Orchestra, founded 1900 by Fritz Scheel, who was its conductor until his death in 1907. Scheel was followed by Karl Pohlig (1907–12). Under the leadership (1912–38) of Leopold Stokowski, the orchestra became one of the world's finest ensembles. Eugene Ormandy, who was appointed coconductor with Stokowski in 1936 and helped to further refine the lush and distinctive "Philadelphia sound," was music director from 1938 to 1980..
