Classical Destinations is a book that will be enjoyed by those who love music but may not play an instrument, those who do play an instrument, and classroom/independent music teachers. Its simple, yet direct style of writing makes reading a pleasure; short reading sessions are accommodated by the sectional layout. The book is divided into destinations by country and discusses some of the major composers that lived and worked there. Included in each section is a full page "At a Glance" high-lighting visitor information about the area such as: Composer Museums/Homes, Top Tourist Attractions Noun 1. tourist attraction - a characteristic that attracts tourists attractive feature, magnet, attractor, attracter, attraction - a characteristic that provides pleasure and attracts; "flowers are an attractor for bees" , Climate, Hotels and so forth, plus a website with Ill more detail. I found the book easy to pick up and put down because sections could be read without disturbing the continuity. There were some interesting and unusual facts about the composers expressed through anecdotes about how the politics of family and country influenced their lives and composing. While it may skim the surface of just a few composers, I learned some interesting new facts, and it created a desire for me to research and learn more. I'll be leaving this book open in my music studio to see if the gorgeous photography tempts students to read about some of their favorite composers. Classical Destinations would make a wonderful gift for a music teacher, and it is definitely on the Christmas shopping list for my father-in-law who loves music, but never played a note.--Reviewed by Jill G.
