Byline: DANCE REVIEW By Gwen Curran For The Register-Guard

My Valentine's Day Valentine's Day: see Saint Valentine's Day.
Valentine's Day

Lovers' holiday celebrated on February 14, the feast day of St. Valentine, one of two 3rd-century Roman martyrs of the same name. St.
evening was well spent with a full house at the Hult Center experiencing the complete "Swan Lake Swan Lake (Russian: Лебединое Озеро, Lebedinoye Ozero, Swan Lake ," music by P.I. Tchaikovsky.

As the curtain came up it revealed a room in Princess Odette's castle. Odette (Jennifer Martin Jennifer Martin is an American voice actress who provides the voice of Ms. Sara Bellum, who is the Mayor of Townsville's assistant, in the Cartoon Network animated television series The PowerPuff Girls. ) is shocked by seeing evil sorcerer (tool) SORCERER - A simple tree parser generator by Terence Parr <parrt@s1.arc.umn.edu>.

SORCERER is suitable for translation problems lying between those solved by code generator generators and by full source-to-source translator generators.

by enormous black wings and transformed into a swan.

Every ballerina dreams of the prestige of dancing flawlessly the demanding dual roles of Odette and Odile. Martin fulfills the dream.

Then to another castle: Prince Siegfried's home and the site of his 21st birthday party. (It must be mentioned that due to an injury, Leoannis Pupo-Guillen took on the Herculean task of learning the role of the prince in a scant 10 days. Kudos on fulfilling his mission.)

The Queen (Sara Lombardi) reminds Prince Siegfried that he must choose a bride before he becomes king. After drinking with his friends, the Prince takes his new crossbow to go hunting alone by the lake.

clearing in the forest and takes aim at a swan in flight. To the Prince's astonishment, the bird turns into a beautiful girl.

Odette unburdens herself with her story: Only in the hours of darkness may she become human. The spell will be broken when a youth marries her.

Odette shows off by dancing alone among the swans. The subtle fluttering of her leg is enticing. Prince Siegfried leaps and jumps and exhibits his manly skills to Odette.

Aha - the sorcerer appears. Odette protects him from Siegfried's bow, for if the sorcerer is killed before she marries, she too will die.

of swans during this act. Siegfried and Odette's pas de duex is as romantic as it is difficult.

After intermission, we are returned to the Great Hall of the Siegfried's castle. It is the Prince's coming-of-age party, and the Queen Mother bids her son choose a bride.

Six princesses each dance a solo for the Prince. Siegfried acknowledges them, but tells his mother he loves another.

The master of ceremonies announces the entertainment: a dance from sunny Spain, Neapolitan dancers. Heather Wallace was superb as the Russian Dancer.

The party is interrupted by Von Rothbart and his black swan daughter, Odile. The prince becomes convinced that this black swan is really his beloved Odette.

One of the most demanding dance sequences for Jennifer as Odile is when she has to perform multiple fouettes - fast, whipping turns on one foot. (The sequence actually originated with gifted ballerina Piernia Legnani (1869-1930), who performed 32 fouettes in her first performance of Odette-Odile.)

Von Rothbart tricks Siegfried into choosing Odile as his bride. Von Rothbart and Odile laugh at the Prince, knowing that Odette is doomed to a swan's life.

Odette appears through the castle window, dismayed that the Prince has forsaken for·sake

her. Realizing he has been deceived, Prince Siegfried rushes back to the lake.

As the curtain slowly rises on the final act V at the lakeside, we see the swans in the ground fog. To oohs and aahs from the audience, the swans rise and fall until all the swans have arisen.

Quartet (Dubraskha Arrivillaga, Ellen Bigelow, Suzanne Haag and Yun-Kyung Kim) was perfection.

This famous ballet quartet is one of the most difficult pieces in ballet. This group of four glided across the stage.

A storm approaches as the Prince dances his heart out with Odette, asking her forgiveness. Von Rothbart literally flies in and summons all his evil powers to force Odette away from Siegfried.

In anger, the Prince kills Von Rothbart. The two lovers are united forever, free of the sorcerer's spell.
