functionality for different environments," said Roger Wallman, senior product manager for core technologies at White Pine. "Distance learning and training is a natural extension of the types of interaction that can happen with audio, video and data collaboration. The ClassPoint option gives MeetingPoint users a way to extend the value of their conferencing solutions to new applications and new groups of users."

The ClassPoint option package includes add-on server functionality as well as client software for 100 students and five instructors. Businesses or educational institutions can also purchase a site license for client software. ClassPoint includes the following specialized features for distance learning:

-- Instructor-Controlled Environment - the instructor moderates participants' interaction by defining when students can share audio and video with the rest of the class and when they can take part in application sharing A data conferencing capability that lets two or more users interactively work on the same application at the same time. The application is loaded and running in only one machine; however, keystrokes are transmitted from and screen changes are transmitted to the other participants.

-- Web-touring - a method by which the instructor can guide the class through a series of Web pages (either prepared class materials or live on the Internet)

-- Polling and Multiple Choice Quizzing - the option to poll the class or ask multiple choice questions; results can be used informally to test comprehension or can be logged for grading

ClassPoint recently won a Portfolio Award from Media & Methods magazine; it is profiled in their May/June 1999 issue.
