Principal dancers from ge Ballet du Senegal, Mariama Basse and Babacar N'Diaye, traveled to L.A. to teach master workshops in West African dance Nov. 14 and 16 at The Dancers' Studio. One of the several styles they taught was Sabar, a feminine, flirtatious form performed by Senegalese women, and rarely seen in the U.S. * Eleven students from the Ailey/Fordham BFA program and two recipients of the Ailey Fellowship performed at the Holland Dance Festival in The Hague in November. They took workshops and shared the stage with prominent international companies such as Compafiia Nacional de Danza, Alonzo King's LINES Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, and Dutch National Ballet. m Dance Theater Workshop has teamed up with the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography at Florida State University to provide residencies for artists commissioned by DTW. Selected U.S.-based choreographers and their performers will have access to resources at both institutions. The first choreographer chosen was Dean Moss. m The nonprofit after school program Saint Joseph Ballet hosted four modern dance companies this winter in their Santa Ana, CA studios. Casebolt and Smith, Contra-Tiempo, Nugent Dance, and Rebecca Pappas each choreographed new pieces that will be performed in a concert titled "New Dance" Feb. 22-23. SJB's nearly 400 low-income students were exposed to the contemporary company's artmaking processes through master classes, lectures/demonstrations, and through watching the professionals work.
