Claro Selects Nortel Networks for GPRS Core Network in Brazil; Wireless Data Network Will Position Operator to Offer Advanced Services, Drive New Revenues.

Claro, one of the leading mobile communications operators in Brazil and a subsidiary of America Movil (NYSE: AMX) (LATIBEX: XAMXL), has selected Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSX: NT) to deploy a GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) core network across all its GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) properties in Brazil.

Based on a recent supply agreement, Nortel Networks is providing Claro with next generation GPRS packet core infrastructure to support wireless data services, and to enhance Claro's wireless Internet management, advanced data routing and security capabilities. The new network is expected to be operational by the end of 2003.

Nortel Networks GPRS Wireless Data Network solution will position Claro to support advanced data services including mobile Web browsing, multimedia services, m-commerce, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and other high-speed wireless data applications. The GPRS network solution will also position Claro to drive new revenue opportunities, while creating efficiencies that can help drive reduced operating costs.
