Clarinet Systems to Increase Speeds in PocketPC PDA's to 4Mbps; 4Mbps FIR Driver Breaks the 'SIR' Speed Barrier for Pocket PC Handheld Devices.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

Clarinet Systems(TM), Inc. a global provider of wireless infrared connectivity for handheld devices, today announces a breakthrough in speed for downloading information onto Pocket PC handheld devices. The company has developed a software driver to take advantage of the 4Mbps speed capabilities in the Compaq iPAQ series 36xx and 37xx and NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.

testing of the FIR (Fast Infrared) driver with the iPAQ models has proven to have a significant increase in speed of up to 8x faster than with standard SIR (Standard Infrared) capabilities. Performing a 1MB file transfer, the iPAQ driver finishes in 14 seconds vs. 112 seconds with the manufacturer SIR.

Another company delivering faster speeds in Pocket PC devices It may never be fully completed or, depending on its its nature, it may be that it can never be completed. However, new and revised entries in the list are always welcome. This is a list of Pocket PC and Windows CE devices, and companies that make, or have made, them.  is NEC Solutions America. NEC has already announced their device is bringing high-speed communication capability to their MobilePro P300 Pocket PC by including 4Mbps FIR functionality. "Its incredible to see our MobilePro P300 finish downloading 100 pages of text from the Internet in 12 seconds through Clarinet's IR access point", said Larry Miller, Vice President and General Manager, Mobile Solutions Division, NEC Solutions (America), Inc.

One Market segment that's looking to take advantage of the FIR speed capabilities is the healthcare industry. The healthcare environment needs to provide quality patient care while operating efficiently. Lengthy paper work, fragmented records, complicated billing procedures and busy physicians can't stand in the way of delivering quality patient care. With FIR speed, physicians can now download patient information fast, and get on to the business of healing.

"PatientKeeper continually evaluates promising, new mobile technologies that have the potential to benefit our healthcare clients and business partners," commented, Stephen S. Hau, founder and VP Platform of PatientKeeper, Inc. "Clarinet System's 4Mbps FIR represents a dramatic improvement in hardware throughput that can help certain users accelerate the exchange data between mobile devices and existing enterprise information systems."

"Network access and synchronization of a PocketPC with 4Mbps FIR capability can be completed in just a few seconds' vs minutes by SIR or any other costly method. At the request of many of our customers and by popular demand, we're proud to see the implementation of FIR capability in NEC's and Compaq's Pocket PC PDA's." said Wen Chang, President of Clarinet Systems.
