Clarifying the EPA-AASA Relationship.


We are concerned about the false impression created by the Federal Dateline column ("Keeping the Feds Out of Your Airspace") in June.

It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and , not to prevent federal mandates on indoor air quality Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) deals with the content of interior air that could affect health and comfort of building occupants. The IAQ may be compromised by microbial contaminants (mold, bacteria), chemicals (such as carbon monoxide, radon), allergens, or any mass or energy stressor , but to create a healthy environment in schools.

The column was designed to inform school leaders that renovation and construction activities and building materials can affect occupants' health. EPA's Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools Action Kit, which is available through AASA's Kari Arfstrom (karfstrom@aasa.org), offers tips for preventing indoor air quality problems.

Addressing indoor air quality can help avoid health problems for students and staff, reduced productivity due to discomfort or sickness, school closings or temporary relocations, negative publicity and potential liability problems.
