, MALDEF MALDEF Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund , and other groups--was spurred by the murder of Marcelo Lucero (pictured here), a young Ecuadorian man who was stabbed to death by a group of teenagers in Long Island. Lucero's seven assailants were high school students who referred to their pastime of harassing Latino immigrants as "beaner hopping." The seven teens have pled not guilty to charges of felony gang assault.

Since Lucero's death, a dozen Latino men in Long Island's Suffolk County Suffolk County may refer to:

 have come forward with reports of similar assaults by local gangs. A new FBI report revealed that hate crimes against Latinos increased by 40 percent between 2003 and 2007.

In response to the public outrage, Long Island authorities have been forced to open a criminal investigation into previously ignored reports of hate crimes and anti-immigrant assaults.
