City wants to offer genetic screening.


LIVERPOOL is bidding to become the first centre outside London to offer genetic screening of early-stage foetuses.

Parents will be offered the chance to find out if their embryos are carrying a serious genetic disorder like cystic fibrosis cystic fibrosis (sĭs`tĭk fībrō`sĭs), inherited disorder of the exocrine glands (see gland), affecting children and young people; median survival is 25 years in females and 30 years in males. , under plans at Liverpool Women's Hospital Liverpool Women's Hospital is NHS Foundation Trust in Liverpool, England. The Trust uses the Single Transferable Vote voting system to elect its Members' Council.[1] References

The trust wants to offer a pioneering technique which will allow people the choice to destroy any "abnormal" embryos, just three days after they are created in a laboratory.

Currently, around 100 Merseyside women a year decide to abort foetuses after they are found to have a problem.

The technique is designed to help people who are at risk of having a child with a serious genetic condition.
