City starts search for downtown-JFK ferry operators.


The rebirth of lower Manhattan Lower Manhattan is the southernmost part of the island of Manhattan, the main island and center of business and government of the City of New York. Lower Manhattan is generally defined as the area delineated on the north by Chambers Street, on the west by the Hudson River (North  received another boost recently as the Port Authority began seeking proposals from ferry operators The following is a list of ferry operators: Asia

 to initiate service between the area and John E Kennedy International Airport--a key component of New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
 Governor George E. Pataki's transportation strategy to improve lower Manhattan's mass-transit options and enhance airport access in New York.

Ferry operators submitting proposals for a JFK-to-lower Manhattan route may include in their proposals additional stops for commuter service in Far Rockaway. Proposals are due in November, 2004. "Ferry service has been a critical part of rebuilding lower Manhattan and making the area more accessible to workers, residents and visitors," said Governor Pataki. "Downtown's revitalization will take another giant step forward with this latest effort, which will provide a fast and direct connection between downtown and the nation's premier international gateway. We also will award contracts soon for ferry services from lower Manhattan to Yonkers and LaGuardia Airport LaGuardia Airport (IATA: LGA, ICAO: KLGA, FAA LID: LGA) is an airport serving New York City, New York, United States, located on the waterfront of Flushing Bay, and borders the neighborhoods of Astoria, Jackson Heights and East Elmhurst in the borough , which together with this JFK route will give downtown more transportation options than ever before."

Port Authority chairman Anthony R. Coscia noted that, "In order to encourage and sustain smart regional growth, we must have a transportation network in place to support it. The use of our waterways has become an important resource as we look to reduce dependence on our bridges, tunnels and existing mass transit mass transit, public transportation systems designed to move large numbers of passengers.  systems. This ferry service will be part of a regional network that now accommodates more than 40,000 people using this form of transportation to get to and from Manhattan each day."

Port Authority executive director Joseph J. Seymour said, "This new route, which will allow easy access between Kennedy Airport and lower Manhattan, is one of several ferry initiatives the Port Authority currently has under way."

"Under Governor Pataki's leadership, we are moving forward with all of our ferry initiatives, including a new five-slip floating terminal that we are building at Battery Park City to support ferry service to lower Manhattan."
