, a pilot program to deliver emergency public information by email, text messages and reverse-911 alerts in four City community districts.

Any interested individual can sign up for Notify NYC through www.nyc.gov and receive information about significant emergency events in four pilot communities: Lower Manhattan Lower Manhattan is the southernmost part of the island of Manhattan, the main island and center of business and government of the City of New York. Lower Manhattan is generally defined as the area delineated on the north by Chambers Street, on the west by the Hudson River (North , the Northeast Bronx, the Bronx, the, borough of New York City, coextensive with Bronx co. (1990 pop. 1,203,789), land area 42 sq mi (106 sq km), SE N.Y. The name comes from Jonas Bronck, who purchased the land from Native Americans in 1639.  Rockaways, and Southwest Staten Island Staten Island (1990 pop. 378,977), 59 sq mi (160 sq km), SE N.Y., in New York Bay, SW of Manhattan, forming Richmond co. of New York state and the borough of Staten Island of New York City. .

The different technologies tested during the pilot will be evaluated to determine whether they could be de-: ployed citywide. The pilots in Lower Manhattan and the Rockaways will test email and text message alerts, and the pilots for the Northeast Bronx and Southwest Staten Island will test email alerts and auto-dialing also called reverse-911.

Deputy Mayor Edward Skyler has overseen the development of Notify NYC, which is the result of a collaborative effort between several city departments. Information about significant emergency events in the four pilot communities will be sent via a differing combination of email, text messages with a maximum length of 120 characters and recorded telephone calls known as reverse-911. The pilot will test two types of messages: "alerts" that will provide time-sensitive information and instructions about an emergency and "notifications" that will serve as informational advisories.
