Although its beginnings were in the House and Home Financing Agency, it was founded in 1965 to develop and execute policy on housing recently awarded a $4.2 million grant to the City of West Hollywood in partnership with two nonprofit housing organizations, the West Hollywood Housing Corporation and WASET WASET World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology , Inc. The grant will be used to build 35 affordable senior residential units, rehabilitate a historic house, and provide a public pocket park on Laurel Avenue Laurel Avenue is an American four-hour television miniseries which aired on HBO in 1993. It was the story of a Minnesota family’s eventful weekend. Charles S. Dutton served as executive producer, and the director was Carl Franklin. in West Hollywood. "This project is a win-win-win for the City, balancing desperately needed affordable senior housing with historic preservation and open space," said West Hollywood Mayor Jeffrey Prang. Former West Hollywood resident Elsie Weisman donated the property on Laurel Avenue to the City in 1997 and lived there until her death three years later. Redevelopment of the property will include rehabilitation of the main house -- maintaining its designation as a local cultural resource -- and creation of 35 units of very low-income senior housing behind the house. The existing house will be reconfigured to provide common areas and community meeting space. The existing open space along Laurel Avenue will remain in place and be dedicated as a public pocket park. The highly competitive HUD grant was one of only four awarded in the Southern California area, from Fresno to San Diego. It was the only grant awarded in Los Angeles County. Renowned architect John Mutlow will spearhead the redevelopment design. Mutlow is an expert in the areas of urban planning and affordable housing design and is on the faculty of the University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission School of Architecture.
