SOUTH GATE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 10, 2002

Mayor Announces Plans to Seek $5,000 Reward for Information Leading

to Arrest and Conviction of the Author(s) of the Threatening Note

Representatives of the City of South Gate announced today they were seeking the assistance of the Attorney General of the State of California in investigating a threatening note that was left in the private mailboxes of the city's police officers. Simultaneously, Mayor Xochilt Ruvalcaba announced she was introducing a motion to the city council next Monday authorizing a $5,000 reward for anyone providing information leading to the arrest and conviction of the author(s) of the threats.

"Public Safety in the City of South Gate is once again being jeopardized by those who seem to have a selfish self·ish

"We will not stand for this kind of behavior from members of our police department and we intend to prosecute To follow through; to commence and continue an action or judicial proceeding to its ultimate conclusion. The notes left in the police private mail boxes included language threatening the officers for "traitorous behavior" and they were told to "Look over your shoulder, until you leave this organization" and "You never know what can happen in this violent world in which we live."

Acting Chief of Police Rick Lopez concurred with the Mayor's assessment of compromised public safety because of the "hostile and fearful" climate the note has created among the rank and file of the police department.

"I have little patience for thugs with badges and will work with the Attorney General's office to ensure that these criminals are caught, dismissed from the department and prosecuted," said Acting Chief Lopez. "I refuse to accept this kind of behavior or action by members of my police department and am prepared to do whatever it takes to bring these thugs to justice. My goal is to work with the Attorney General to get to the bottom of this matter immediately. My only concern is that in conducting this investigation, we may just be touching the tip of the iceberg tip of the iceberg

Acting Chief Lopez indicated he was meeting with representatives from the Attorney General's office this afternoon to discuss when and how to proceed with the investigation.
