) that will improve business efficiency, data management and member services.

ERS, a $3.7 billion pension fund, administers retirement benefits for active or deferred city employees and participating agencies, which include any board commission, division, department, office or agency of the city. In total, ERS services 27,000 individuals, including 16,700 active and deferred members and 10,300 benefit recipients.

Utilizing Covansys' proprietary, Java-based Public Retirement Fund systems framework called Clarety, the new system will enable the city to provide more timely and efficient member services. PMIS will also be designed to increase operational efficiency due to improved common functions and shared data, while maintaining enough flexibility to address changing federal, state, and city rules and regulations.

"It is our goal to provide the best possible services to our members and employers in a cost-effective and time efficient manner," said Anne Bahr, executive director, Milwaukee ERS. "When fully implemented, PMIS will significantly enhance our customer service capabilities and improve internal operations through the elimination of redundant databases and paper intensive processes. We are pleased to be teamed with an expert like Covansys and are confident that the ERS will benefit from their industry leadership within the public sector."

"We are delighted that ERS has selected our Web-based solution, Clarety. This will be Covansys' first Clarety implementation at the local government level. All of our prior implementations have been statewide. We believe this will open up the larger local market for our proven retirement solution," said Arvind Malhotra, Covansys Public Sector senior vice president. "We feel confident that implementing Clarety will provide significant productivity gains to the ERS staff, while improving customer service to system members, retirees and employers for years to come."

The Java edition of Clarety is fast becoming a preferred solution in the public sector market. Powered by IBMWebsphere(1), the Java edition is the most technically advanced edition of Covansys' Clarety retirement software to date. IBM's WebSphere infrastructure software enables organizations to develop, deploy and integrate next-generation e-business applications, from basic Web publishing Creating a Web site and placing it on the Web server. A Web site is a collection of HTML pages with the home page typically named INDEX.HTML. Web sites are designed using Web authoring software which provides a graphical layout capability or by hand coding in HTML or both.  to enterprise-scale transaction processing Updating the appropriate database records as soon as a transaction (order, payment, etc.) is entered into the computer. It may also imply that confirmations are sent at the same time.

Transaction processing systems are the backbone of an organization because they update constantly.
. The Milwaukee ERS will deploy WebSphere technology, in conjunction with Covansys' Clarety solution, for the delivery of valuable information and services to constituents of the public sector, including improved customer service and productivity.

Milwaukee ERS is the third retirement customer that has selected the Java edition since its general release in 2002.
