City of Dallas Implements BMC Software Solutions to Optimize Resources and Enhance Service.

Data Center Efficiency

(NYSE:BMC), the leading provider of enterprise management, today announced that the City of Dallas has selected the INCONTROL and PATROL products to optimize operations and enhance the services that the data center provides to various city departments. In addition, the City of Dallas utilized BMC Software's Professional Services organization to perform the implementation and deployment of the following products: CONTROL-M(R) suite (for business integrated scheduling), CONTROL-D(R) (for business information management) and PATROL (for performance management). The data center provides information services to various city organizations such as the police, fire, public safety and planning departments.

The City of Dallas' goal is to improve the business process through automation. The department decided to migrate the applications from its 30-year-old operating system to distributed platforms. The City of Dallas also made the strategic decision to strengthen their data center infrastructure to accommodate future growth.

"BMC's PATROL products will enable us to detect potential problems before they occur and the INCONTROL products will allow us to manage the business applications in a more integrated fashion to maximize efficiency."

Business Integrated Scheduling and Performance Management

The City of Dallas began the project this past January. BMC Software's Professional Services installed the PATROL Knowledge Modules (KMs) to proactively monitor the health of the operating system. Professional Services worked with the communications and information services department to start the conversion process and then implemented and deployed the products. Additionally, BMC Software's Professional Services team trained the City of Dallas personnel on how to use the BMC Software solutions. With the PATROL Knowledge Modules in place, the appropriate personnel are alerted to potential bottlenecks and system outages can be prevented. For example, the PATROL Enterprise Manager is tightly integrated with the help desk ticket system. When a situation occurs, a trouble ticket is automatically created and assigned to an individual.

With the help of BMC Software Professional Services, the IS department also installed CONTROL-M, which is replacing the data center's homegrown systems. CONTROL-T(R), BMC Software's tape management product, was also installed so that the city can more efficiently manage the records systems. CONTROL-M provides the data center with an enterprise-wide view of all the business applications, regardless of location, platform or operating system. From one central point, data center personnel are able to see the entire business process and proactively plan to maximize system resources.

For example, integration between CONTROL-M and PATROL will enable the data center to more proactively manage business applications. CONTROL-M's dynamic workload balancing capabilities help ensure that resources are optimized. Jobs scheduled throughout the data center can be monitored via PATROL and managed through CONTROL-M for the most effective use of resources. Any output, such as reports, billing documents, etc., generated by the business applications can then be distributed to different destinations using CONTROL-D. The documents and reports can be sent to recipients via fax, e-mail, or made available online.
