Tuesday, April 22nd at 6:00 p.m. - Bellflower City Hall

The City of Bellflower will honor a dozen local residents for outstanding contributions to the community as part of the citizen recognition ceremony, "Bellflower Honors," which will be held on Tuesday, April 22 at 6:00 p.m. at Bellflower City Hall, 16600 Civic Center Drive.

Awardees include USMC Lance Corporal Henry Lopez, 20, of Bellflower, who last month was wounded by an AK-47 during an ambush by Iraqi soldiers outside Basra. The bullet, still lodged in Henry's neck, is too close to his spine to remove but poses no danger, according to according to

 military doctors. Henry will attend the ceremony with his family and speak of his battlefield experiences in Iraq.

Other winners include Bellflower students who won the recent regional Science Olympiad Science olympiad may refer to:

  • Science Olympiad, a high school and middle school competition held in the United States
, a volunteer who has logged hundreds of hours helping veterans, Bellflower's Deputy of the Quarter from the L.A. County Sheriff's department, and local high school students who have achieved excellence in academics and sports.

The Mayor and members of the City Council will present the awardees with certificates of achievement. Immediately following, a buffet dinner catered as a donation by Salazar's Mexican Grill will be served in the lobby. The event is free and open to the public.
