City of Bellflower Launches Annual Enforcement Campaign to Confiscate Illegal Fireworks.

As part of the enforcement efforts, Sheriff's deputies will utilize bicycles, and unmarked radio cars to monitor community activities. In 2003, deputies seized approximately 35,000 individual illegal fireworks during the week-long campaign.

"Illegal explosives can cause great harm, especially to children," said Mayor Dorothy King. "If our aggressive enforcement will prevent even a single injury to our residents, it's well worth the effort."

A "no questions asked" amnesty amnesty (ăm`nəstē), in law, exemption from prosecution for criminal action. It signifies forgiveness and the forgetting of past actions.  drop-off will be set up at Bellflower fire stations to safely dispose of illegal fireworks already purchased.

"Legal fireworks bearing the safe-and-sane label are allowed in Bellflower, but only from July 1st through the fifth and only during certain hours," said Joel Hockman, Director of Public Safety. "For people who may have already purchased fireworks that do not contain the safe-and-sane label, the City offers an amnesty turn-in program. Simply place the fireworks in a box, transport them in the trunk of your vehicle and drop them off at the nearest fire station, no questions asked."
