City medic's Faslane demo.


A MEDICAL student from Birmingham has travelled to Scotland as part of a health professionals' blockade of the Faslane nuclear submarine base A base providing logistic support for submarines. .

Kiran Cheedella is the UK representative for International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) is a worldwide grouping of 60 national medical organizations. IPPNW uses research, education and advocacy to help prevent nuclear war and encourage the abolition of all nuclear weapons. .

Doctors, nurses, therapists and other health professionals joined Faslane 365 to declare their opposition to Trident and the government's plans for its replacement.

Kiran said: "As medics, we learn the value of primarily preventing disease and ill health.

"The Government's decision to build new nukes encourages global proliferation and the diversion of resources to prevent poverty, malnutrition, disease and the devastating dev·as·tate

1. To lay waste; destroy.

2. To overwhelm; confound; stun: was devastated by the rude remark.
 effects of climate change."

Those taking part in this weekend's protest were from Devon, London, Southampton, Bristol, the Midlands, the North of England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany and Sweden.

The 30-strong group is also planning to leaflet hospital.

Faslane 365 is a oneyear blockade of the Trident base at Faslane which began in October.
