People in the city are 38 per cent less likely to make a home insurance claim than the average policy-holder, insurers Endsleigh said.

That makes it the fifth safest place in the UK to avoid being burgled.

People in Nottingham, Leeds and Hull are at greatest risk of burglary.

Only Swindon, Dundee, Guildford and Bath are ahead of Coventry in the low-risk table.

Endsleigh says effective action by the police, the city council and community organisations had helped produce the results in Coventry.

Stuart Wartalski, of Endsleigh, said: "Coventry is a great example of where local authorities working hand in hand with the community have played a key role in bringing down crime.

Through offering grants towards the cost of resident-run gating schemes, the community safety team in Coventry show how they are attempting to reduce crime in the area."
