City gets grant to buy acreage for wetlands.

The Oregon Watershed watershed, elevation or divide separating the catchment area, or drainage basin, of one river system or group of river systems from another system or group of systems. The term is also often used synonymously with drainage basin.  Enhancement Board has awarded $500,000 to the city of Eugene to help acquire 75 acres of west-side wetlands.

The $500,000 will be matched by $680,000 from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, $530,000 from the North American North American

 Wetlands Conservation Act and $250,000 from the city's stormwater management section, for a total of $1.96 million.

The 75 acres will be placed in a conservation land trust to ensure it's maintained and preserved as wetlands. The acreage - all wetland prairie prairie

The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board was created in 1999 to fund local voluntary efforts to improve water quality and quantity, enhance habitat for critical fish runs, and restore and protect watersheds and wildlife habitat to support local economies.

The money for acquisitions comes from a variety of sources, including a voter-approved 7.5 percent set-aside from lottery proceeds for watershed restoration and protection.
