A NEW medal named after the Queen to be given the families of fallen soldiers will be struck by a Birmingham firm with a proud tradition of honouring heroes. Jewellery Quarter-based Gladman and Norman will make up to 8,000 of the Elizabeth Cross awards to be handed out to the families of Armed Forces personnel killed in battle or by terrorist attacks since 1945. It will be the first time that the name of a reigning monarch has been given to a new award since the George Cross was instituted in 1940 by George VI. The Elizabeth Cross will be presented in a leather case and come alongside a small pin-on version. The award features a laurel wreath passing between the arms of the cross which bear floral symbols representing England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The reverse of the cross bears the crowned cypher of the Queen, which will also hold the engraved name of the deceased. Gladman and Norman designer Dayna White, aged 39, said: "To have it called Elizabeth is quite staggering and very emotional. "When I was asked to design it I thought, 'Oh crikey Crikey is an independent Australian electronic magazine comprising an open access website and an email newsletter available to subscribers. Well known in Australian political, media and business circles, Crikey's influence extends beyond its subscriber base (more than 14,000 , it's a big responsibility to design something so important'. I had to design it with respect - respecting the lives of so many people." Ms White had produced a number of designs and six were shown to the Queen, who chose "my favourite", the designer said.
