City contractors: ranked by 2007 vendor payments from the City of Los Angeles.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY THE 25 largest contractors doing business with the city of Los Angeles received $735 million in payments during the fiscal year ended June 30, according to the City Controller's office. Medical benefits providers Kaiser Permanente and Blue Cross of California are the two highest-paid contractors. Dental benefits provider Delta Dental of California received payments of $14.2 million. As a group, these companies were paid $199 million, up $13 million compared with the previous fiscal year. Construction services represent the largest sector with 11 companies on this year's list. Total spending for construction services was $367 million. Contractors bid and started construction on a variety of large projects for the city, ranging from transportation infrastructure to education facilities. Environmental service In-ms Browning Ferris Industries, which operates the Bradley Landfill in Sun Valley, and Torrance-based Ecology Control Industries received payments of $22.9 million and $15.6 million, respectively. The list excludes contracts with the city's three proprietary agencies, which handle the airports, port and the Department of Water and Power. [GRAPHICS OMITTED] THE PACESETTER KAISER PERMANENTE KAISER Permanente is the largest company doing business with the city of Los Angeles according to the City Controller's Office. It is the leading health benefits provider for city employees, who can choose from a number of health care options. The Oakland-based nonprofit health plan and hospital chain received payments totaling $102.7 million from the city in the fiscal year ended June 30, up $9.2 million from the previous year. Kaiser has numerous hospital rebuilding projects under way in Los Angeles County, including the L.A. Medical Center. The total cost of projects under construction is more than $1 billion and will provide more than 1,000 new beds. In addition to facilities, Kaiser is in the process of implementing its electronic medical record system throughout Kaiser Permanente Southern California. The system will make medical information immediately available to physicians and other health care providers. Ultimately, Kaiser expects the system to make more medical information available to patients. First opened to public enrollment in 1945, Kaiser has more than 3 million members in Southern California.
