City contractors: ranked by 2006 vendor payments from the City of Los Angeles.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY THE 25 largest contractors doing business with the City of Los Angeles received $584.7 million in payments during the fiscal year ended June 30. No. 1 Kaiser Permanente is one of four benefits providers on the list. As a group, these companies were paid $195.8 million in the last fiscal year. Construction services represent the largest sector, with eight companies on the list. Spending for construction services among those companies barely exceeded benefits spending, totaling $205.3 million in fiscal year 2005. Transportation providers accounted for $33.5 million in spending, led by First Transit Inc. The Cincinnati-based transit provider moved up one spot as payments made to the contractor increased by $1 million to $19.8 million. Five new companies appear on this year's list, including two construction firms. Colich Construction LP of Torrance made the highest debut at No. 5 with $27 million in payments, while Bernards Bros Inc. of San Fernando ranked No. 13 with $15.3 million in payments. The list excludes contracts with the city's three proprietary agencies, which handle the airports, port and the water and power utility. THE PACESETTER KAISER PERMANENTE Kaiser Permanente is the largest company doing business with the City of Los Angeles, since it is the leading provider of health benefits for city employees who have a number of health care options. The Oakland-based non-profit health plan and hospital chain received payments totaling $93.5 million from the city in the fiscal year ended June 30, up $6.9 million from the previous year and $15.4 million higher than fiscal 2004. Kaiser has five hospital rebuilding projects under way in Los Angeles County. Its five facilities have more than 1,000 beds and the construction costs are greater than $1.3 billion. In addition to new facilities, Kaiser will be introducing an electronic medical record system throughout Kaiser Permanente Southern California over the next two years. The new system will make medical information immediately available to physicians and other health care providers. Ultimately, Kaiser expects the system to make more medical information available to patients themselves. First opened to public enrollment in 1945, Kaiser has more than 3 million members in Southern California.
