City appoints urban design director.


City Planning city planning, process of planning for the improvement of urban centers in order to provide healthy and safe living conditions, efficient transport and communication, adequate public facilities, and aesthetic surroundings.  Director Amanda M. Burden announced the appointment of Alexandros Washburn as director of Urban Design for the Department.

Washburn will lead a team of urban designers in working on large-scale planning and development initiatives, as well as advising on key urban design and public open space issues citywide. Thomas Wargo was also named as the Department's director of zoning.

Burden has made it a priority of her tenure at City Hall to strengthen the urban design sector and has added 10 such specialists to the department since 2001. She said that establishing the position of director of urban design will serve as a resource that can strengthen the department's.
