City aims for solid finish in next road striping season.

Byline: CITY BEAT/EUGENE By Joe Mosley The Register-Guard

Say good-bye to the "dashed" or "skipped" yellow stripes that mark the middle of many city streets.

Eugene's road maintenance crews began replacing them this summer with double solid lines, and plan to finish the changeover on most neighborhood streets by the end of next summer's striping Interleaving or multiplexing data to increase speed. See disk striping.

"The skips don't show up as well as the solid lines, and with the solid lines there is more of a sense of narrowing the road, which may encourage people to go slower," city traffic engineer Tom Larsen says.

As for the effect of double lines, he points out that state law allows passing on roads marked by dashed lines but prohibits it wherever there is a double solid line.

"My question is, what area of town do you want me to consider a safe passing zone?" Larsen says.

"We are trying to send a message we don't think it's safe to be passing in town."

The city has received a complaint or two about the double stripes applied during the past summer on Orchard Street The name Orchard Street can refer to the following roads:
  • Orchard Street (Manhattan), New York City
  • Orchard Street (London)
  • Orchard Road, Singapore
 and 28th and 29th avenues.

Critics have said the new lines have a "speedway" look, and point out that the double-solid pattern requires seven times as much paint as the single dashed lines of the past.

"There very obviously is a marginal increase in the materials cost, but it costs just as much to run the equipment down the road," Larsen says, pointing out that personnel expenses account for most of the striping program's $100,000 annual budget.
