), City Market is the flagship concept of a high-end grocery and specialty retail format that is slated for expansion over the next two years. "We are testing and evaluating in-store technologies that help enhance our clients' shopping experience and provide strategic differentiation for us," Argumedo explained. "As we prove the concept and see sustained consumer usage of these advanced technologies, we'll deploy them in more locations."

Francisco Farrera, practice director for global commercial industries at Unisys Mexico, which resells and distributes Fujitsu retail solutions in Mexico, said that technologies like U-Scan "help position City Market as a forward-thinking trend setter that provides a unique environment for its customers."

"Even though self-checkout is largely new to Mexico, shoppers seem open and willing to use it, especially for orders in the 10-15 item range, where it's most convenient to get in and out of the store quickly," he said.

"City Market is a leader in leveraging innovative technology to improve the shopping experience and a pioneer for self-checkout in Mexico," said Doug Wallace, senior vice president sales and client management, Fujitsu Transaction Solutions. "We are delighted that City Market selected Fujitsu's U-Scan self-checkout system as another way to provide their customers a differentiated shopping experience."

Other technology investments in the new format include electronic shelf labels (ESLs); shopping carts equipped with tablet-size personal computers that guide shoppers and help them locate items throughout the store; and new perishables scales that help ensure price accuracy.

City Market, the newest banner under the CCM umbrella, sells a wide variety of high-quality groceries and perishables.
