City Council's Approval of New TEP Franchise Heads for Voter Consideration in November Election.

TUCSON, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 25, 2000

On July 10, the Mayor and City Council of the City of Tucson unanimously approved a new 25-year operating franchise for Tucson Electric Power Tucson Electric Power (TEP) is an electric utility company serving southern Arizona in the United States. It is a subsidiary of the UniSource Energy Corporation.

Tucson Electric Park, a baseball stadium on Tucson's south side, is named for TEP.

Ultimate approval of the franchise will rest with voters in the Nov. 7 General Election.

Terms of the new franchise include enhanced coordination between the City and TEP in areas such as planning, construction and maintenance for the company's electric transmission and distribution system.

The franchise fee, charged by the City and collected by TEP, will contain a Public Benefits portion. The City will use this money to assist low-income electric customers; help the City bear the costs of underground utility installations; and help meet the costs of building renewable energy Renewable energy utilizes natural resources such as sunlight, wind, tides and geothermal heat, which are naturally replenished. Renewable energy technologies range from solar power, wind power, and hydroelectricity to biomass and biofuels for transportation.  systems such as solar electric generation and heating facilities.
