City's 'gon' canal crazy.


VISITORS to a popular waterfront development in Birmingham were stopped in their tracks as Italian-style activities were staged to celebrate the city's canal network.

Flag Date Use Description
, gondolas, face painters, Italian ball gowns and masks and balloon sculptors as the second city paid homage to its historic canals.

The Italian theme referred to the myth Birmingham boasts more canal miles than Venice and was devised by Jessica Black of West Midlands West Midlands, former metropolitan county, central England. Created in the 1974 local government reorganization, the county embraced the Birmingham conurbation and comprised seven metropolitan districts: Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell, Birmingham, Solihull,  Waterways, which helped organise the celebrations.
