Apartment resident arrested after fight

NEWPORT - Two Newport residents died Monday afternoon when a van veered off Highway 20 and struck a fir tree, Oregon State Police said.

The right front passenger, Donald Schwab, 64, was killed, as was the middle passenger, Kim Schwab, 27.

Kim Schwab's two girls, a 5-year-old and a 1-year-old, survived the crash, as did the driver, Darleen Schwab, 59.

 said Monday that he has more than the 89,000 valid signatures needed to put a measure controlling payroll deductions for political purposes on the November ballot.

He said he had in the neighborhood of 110,000 signatures and would deliver them to the secretary of state's office within the next few weeks.

The initiative, which would be Measure 18, would prohibit unions from deducting money from paychecks for political purposes without written permission from the employee.
