Firefighters responded at 7:10 p.m. and found the home, about 1 1/2 miles east of Cheshire on Highway 36, engulfed in flame. Smoke from the fire was visible from several miles away, Perry said.

The mother told firefighters she came home and found smoke pouring from the front window. She and a boyfriend were able to rescue four dogs inside the home, but a cat perished in the fire, Perry said.

The fire began in the living room area but a cause has not yet been determined, Perry said Sunday. The family was renting the mobile home, which was a total loss, he said. The value of the home was not immediately known.
