Springfield man dies after being hit by car

A 78-year-old Springfield man was killed Saturday night when he was hit by a vehicle while walking on Main Street, Springfield police said.

 Foster of 272 Smith Loop died at the scene. Springfield police Sgt. Dick Jones said Foster was crossing Main Street in the 4300 block about 6:30 p.m. when he was struck by a westbound vehicle driven by Deborah Jeanyce Lares, 48, of Springfield.

Police said darkness, a lack of street lighting and rain may have contributed to the accident. Speed and alcohol were not considered factors in the accident, Jones said.

An investigation was continuing late Saturday, but no charges were expected to be filed, police said.
