, began opening up his village to the wider world a decade ago when the first road to the village was built. Now he has moved far beyond that beginning by building an on-ramp to the information superhighway. As part of SCI's Cyber Sister Cities Project, Nana Sarpong traveled to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 2003 to visit Citrix headquarters and to tour a new fish farm established in a blighted area of Fort Lauderdale called Collier City. Donated Citrix access solutions enable local residents to access, from anywhere, the information they need to run their fledgling business efficiently.

Nana Sarpong took this knowledge back with him to Agogo Agogo may refer to:

which provided guidance, technological expertise and other contributions to the project. The result was the Agogo ICT Training and Access Center, which officially opened its doors in April 2006 with ceremonies attended by high-level officials of the Ghana government, including the Vice President and the country's minister of communications.

"The cities of our continent have experienced the Internet, and now at last it has also arrived in rural Africa with the Agogo ICT Training and Access Center," said Nana Sarpong, Paramount Chief of the Traditional Area of Ashanti-Agogo. "This is an extraordinary transformation, and our community is galvanized gal·va·nize

around the new opportunities technology brings to us."

The Center features 18 networked computers and satellite access to the Internet. Local residents can access applications such as e-learning courses from the World Bank and the Microsoft Office Suite, share information among themselves and conduct e-commerce anywhere in the world. Through the Center, Agogo citizens now have increased access to health information, e-learning programs, a land registry and an information repository of their culture--recording and preserving the ancient Ashanti traditions and history even as the tribe joins the information revolution of the 21st Century. Ultimately, this new level of information access will lead to improved healthcare, expanded education and communications, and new economic opportunities.

"What's so exciting about being in Agogo and opening the Agogo ICT Training and Access Center is the ability for local young people to get connected, to learn to use the technologies, and to implement Citrix technology in sustainable programs," said Mark Templeton, Citrix president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "We recognize the responsibility as a worldwide corporate citizen to leverage our resources and our unique expertise in access to bridge the digital divide, and we're honored to be a part of that process for the citizens of Agogo."

Central to Citrix's approach was the conviction that to significantly impact a developing nation, a sustainable technology training and access program must go far beyond installing PCs and connecting to the Internet. Citrix worked at the local level in collaboration with business, government, education and community leaders to build the local capacity to support a self-sustaining program based on a business model, technical platform, and training approach that were relevant to Agogo's environment and situation.

"This award honors Citrix for pioneering the concept of Cyber Sister Cities, empowering city-to-city and citizen-to-citizen partnerships through the innovative use of information and communications technology," said Tim Honey, Executive Director, Sister Cities International. "The Cyber Sister Cities model strengthens communities through greater access to economic, health and educational resources and supports UN Millennium Development Goals “MDG” redirects here.
