Citrix Helps BAA Deliver 28% Cost Savings Per IT Seat; Refreshes Entire Infrastructure to Speed up Application Deployment; Terminal 5 Development Inspires Move to Server-Based Computing.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- BAA plc, the world's leading airports company, has overhauled its technology infrastructure to dramatically reduce the number of applications on its network, and prepare for the extension of its IT infrastructure when the company opens Heathrow's new terminal - T5 in 2008.

The implementation of the Citrix Access Suite(TM), will also cut the cost of managing and maintaining the network, and slash the cost of adding and supporting BAA's users.

The company has reduced the number of applications it uses from 2,300 to about 520, of which 199 are now delivered via Citrix Presentation Server(TM) to locked-down devices which include Wyse thin clients.

The project has seen over 8,500 users in seven airports and six other sites migrated to the new system enabling applications and data to be accessed through a browser-based interface. As a result, the cost per seat for installing, managing and maintaining users has been cut by 28%. Logged calls to the service desk are down by 11%, and second-line desktop support calls have fallen by 43%.

The time to deploy new desktops and applications has also halved since the Citrix system was introduced.

Kevin Mercer, BAA services and support manger, said, "We have around GBP 7 billion planned investment in airports in the South East alone over the next eleven years, and these investments will be underpinned by IT. This is not a tactical implementation or a short term fix. It is a deliberate and company-wide overhaul of our entire infrastructure which is already enabling us to realize significant cost- and time-savings."

"Our IT teams chose to move to server-based computing using Citrix so that we could cut costs, and avoid having to update and re-code legacy applications," continued Mercer. "There was a risk - many people within BAA had a lot of control over their desktops, and removing this could have created a big issue for them and us. However, we persevered with the implementation, and all-round satisfaction with the results has really influenced the continued success of the project."

As BAA is now increasingly reliant on the network to deliver applications to users, it has become a far more important issue for the airports company. As a result, further monitoring and management tools have been added and later this year, BAA expects to implement Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 to further enhance this, in preparation for delivery of IT to Terminal 5.
